4 Things to Keep in Mind Before Heading Out to the Del Mar Racetrack

Another year, another season of racing in Del Mar. Every new summer at the racetrack brings new events, parties, and experiences. Thoroughbred Club veterans know to research and bring along a few things with them every time they visit the track. Here’s what you should be keeping in mind before you head out, too.

1) Your Outfit

The dress code at the racetrack has been deemed “California chic,” or a cool blend of casual and sophistication. If you’re planning on viewing the action from the Turf Club, you’ll be required to dress with a little more formality than the rest of the stands. Men must wear a dress shirt or sport jacket at all times; denim, athletic shoes, shorts, and T-shirts are not permitted. Women are required to be in suits, daytime dresses, or sundresses; denim, sneakers, and shorts are not allowed. Whatever your style may be, you can find your perfect outfit at Del Mar Plaza.

If you’ll be at the track on Opening Day—this year it’s Wednesday, July 18—don’t forget to don a fabulous hat or fascinator. (You might just win the Hat Contest!)

2) The Weather

For the most part, you can always count on a gorgeous, sunny day in Del Mar. While the stands are shaded for the most part, walking to and from the parking lot and meandering around the grounds under cloudless skies could lead to sun-burnt noses and unseemly tan lines. And some days might be warmer than others, so be sure to check the forecast and predicted high temperatures before finalizing your outfit.

3) Racetrack Events

The Del Mar Racetrack offers so much more than racing and betting. The summer lineup includes family-friendly events Camp Del Mar (for kids 5-12) and Family Fun Day. There are also several concerts throughout the season, as well as a Food Truck Festival, Craft Beer Festival, Surf & Turf BBQ Championship, and weekly Happy Hours. So if you’re planning on visiting the track, make sure you check the schedule so you know what you’re getting into.

4) Pre-Race Fare

While the Thoroughbred Club has its share of libations and bites, it doesn’t hurt to have a little bubbly with brunch before you make your way over to the racetrack. Pacifica Breeze Café opens early so you can sip on a Bloody Mary, mimosas, or a breakfast beer while enjoying a meal on the sun-filled patio.
