The San Diego County Fair attracts more than 1.6 million visitors each year. Among its draw are the animal exhibits, contests, concerts, rides, and of course, fair food. Enticing treats like bacon-wrapped corndogs, Krispy Kreme hamburgers, and cotton candy ice cream sandwiches are sometimes too good to pass up. Before you know it, all the sweets and fried food can have you feeling bloated and sluggish.
Del Mar Plaza is just a few miles away from the fairgrounds, and we have a few tricks to help you get back on track after indulging at the fair. These five remedies will help you detox and beat that fair-induced sugar rush.
Get Your Veggies In
Now, we’re sure you can find fried avocado and fried zucchini at a few of the food stalls, but that’s not the type of vegetables we’re referencing. Fresh greens like a salad or sautéed broccolini from Pacifica Del Mar will give you the nutrition your body is craving. You can also stop by our weekly Farmer’s Market and snag some vegetables to take home with you and cook up yourself.
Add Protein to Your Plate
Protein helps curb cravings and keeps you feeling full longer. When your sugar crash hits, you’ll want to make sure you’re reaching for a protein dish like fresh sushi from Shimbashi Izakaya or the Pollo Toscano from Il Fornaio, instead of more carbs or processed food.
Do Something Active
Sweating off the sweets is always a good idea. You can visit Lorna Jane or Urban Beach House and treat yourself to new activewear and then head out for a hike at Torrey Pines or a walk along the beach. Working out and burning off the junk food from the fair will help your body reset in no time.
Rehydrate Your Skin
Too much greasy food can wreak havoc on your skin. If you feel like you got carried away with the fried snacks, it might not be a bad idea to book a facial and give your pores a breather. Momma’s Medi Spa, Salon Republic, and Del Mar Nails and Spa offer cleansing facial treatments that will help prevent the break outs or dull skin that may be caused by all the fair food.
Don’t Stress About It
Even if you have a season pass to the fair, chances are, you won’t be indulging so heavily every time you go. Chock the sweets up to cheat day or special treat and leave it at that. A balanced diet and lots of water will cancel out the extra calories you may have consumed, and after all, it’s summer and you should be able to treat yourself.
