Come join us to celebrate New Year in a Japanese traditional rice cake pounding event, Mochitsuki.
A local Japanese choir group, Chorus Kaguya, will perform during the event. Enjoy complimentary mochi (rice cakes), ozoni (Japanese New Year’s soup), demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages. In addition to mochitsuki, there also will be many other offerings!
Mochitsuki is an important part of the New Year celebration in Japan, which is thought to bring good health for the coming year. During mochitsuki, rice is pounded with a huge, wooden hammer called a Kine in a traditional mortar called an Usu. It takes brawn, stamina and a sense of cultural adventure.
Seating at the patio is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.
